How to Edit a PDF Online: Text, Images, Annotations & Signatures

A PDF preserves layout beautifully and resists change completely. Correct a date, add a note, highlight a clause, drop in a logo, sign a form, reorder the pages, and you are usually sent back to whatever produced the file. The free RMBG.PRO PDF Editor is a visual workspace for exactly those jobs, and it runs inside your browser.

What Is a PDF Editor?

A PDF editor modifies a PDF that already exists. It adds content — text, images, highlights, drawings, shapes, signatures — and reorganises what is already there: page order, orientation and presence.

This is where it differs from a word processor. Word and Docs files store flowing paragraphs that reflow when you change the font. A PDF stores fixed drawing instructions per page: glyphs at exact coordinates, embedded font subsets, images and vector paths, all sized for one page. There is no paragraph to reflow, so nothing can be retyped into. A PDF editor is therefore built around placing content on the page rather than around a text cursor.

How to Edit a PDF Online with RMBG.PRO

  1. Open your PDF. Drag it onto the upload area or click to browse. It is read locally while page previews are prepared.
  2. Select a page. The Pages sidebar shows thumbnails labelled with the number of edits on each. Click one, or use the selector in the status bar.
  3. Choose a tool. The toolbar holds Select, Select text, Add text, Cover and replace, Image, Draw, Highlight area, Underline, Strike through, Rectangle, Ellipse, Line, Arrow, Whiteout and Signature.
  4. Make changes. Click to place text and images, drag to draw highlights and shapes. Switch to Select to click an object, drag the corner handle to resize, or set exact position, size, colour, stroke width and opacity in the Properties panel.
  5. Organize pages. Each thumbnail can move up or down, rotate 90° clockwise, duplicate or delete.
  6. Export. Choose Export PDF, watch the progress, then download. The file is saved with an -edited suffix; your original is never overwritten.

The status bar always shows the page count and whether you have unsaved edits. If you try to close or navigate away with edits pending, the editor offers to export first.

Add Text to a PDF

Pick Add text and click where it should start. A box appears that you type into, covering the common needs: filling a blank the author left, labelling a diagram, adding a date, noting a reference, explaining a figure. RMBG.PRO offers three font families, sizes from 6 to 144, bold, italic and underline, a colour, and left, centre or right alignment. Text wraps inside its box, and you can widen the box rather than shrink the type. Because it stays a live object, you can reopen it and retype at any point.

Can You Edit Existing Text in a PDF?

Precisely: no. RMBG.PRO does not do true reflowing text editing of content already in your PDF. You cannot click inside an existing paragraph, delete a word and watch the sentence close up, because that paragraph is not stored as a paragraph.

What exists is Cover and replace. Activate it and the page outlines its horizontal text regions. Click one and the editor reads it, estimates its font family, size, weight and slant, then places a text box over it already containing the original wording. Retype the correction and the region sits behind a solid cover whose colour you can change, which matters on a non-white page.

Two limits deserve emphasis. Only horizontal regions are offered, and the covering is purely visual: the original text remains in the file and other software can still extract it. The accurate description is “replace or cover existing content and add new text”, not “edit any text inside any PDF”.

Add Images to a PDF

The Image tool inserts a logo, stamp, product shot, diagram or photo. PNG, JPEG and WebP are accepted, and you can pick a file or drag one straight onto the page. Images keep their aspect ratio while resizing, and opacity can be lowered when a mark should sit behind content rather than on it. Limits: under 20 MB and 64 megapixels, with oversized images reduced to 2,400 pixels per side so the PDF does not balloon.

Annotate a PDF Online

Annotation is the broader workflow: marking a document up so someone sees what you changed, approved or queried. It suits reviewing a report, studying a paper, returning a contract with notes, or marking corrections on a drawing. It is also asynchronous, which fits most review processes better than editing the same file together live.

Highlight important content

Highlight area paints a translucent rectangle over anything you drag across, on body text, tables, photographs or scans. The default soft yellow sits at partial opacity so text stays readable; colour and opacity are both adjustable. For a single word, Underline and Strike through draw a precise line between two points instead of a box.

Draw on a PDF

Draw records freehand strokes as you drag: margin notes, a circle around a figure, a hand-drawn arrow, a tick beside a list item. Strokes are stored as paths so they stay sharp when zoomed. Colour, width from 0.5 to 20 and opacity are adjustable, and each stroke is an independent object you can move or delete.

Add shapes, lines and arrows

Rectangle and Ellipse box a number or ring a detail, each either transparent or filled. Line and Arrow draw a straight segment between two points, the arrow adding a head at the far end — the quickest way to point at something in a dense paragraph.

Cover or Replace PDF Content

Whiteout fills a rectangle with an opaque colour, which genuinely helps when tidying a draft: masking a duplicated block, removing a stray mark, hiding a placeholder before sending.

Be clear about what it is not. Whiteout draws on top of the page; it deletes nothing. The original content remains in the PDF and can still be extracted. Visual covering is not secure redaction. To remove an identifier, account number or address for good, remove the underlying content rather than painting over it, and treat any whiteout as cosmetic only.

Add a Signature to a PDF

The Signature dialog offers three methods: draw your signature on the pad and clear it to retry, type your name and have it rendered and scaled to fit, or upload a PNG, JPEG or WebP signature image. It lands as an object you can move and resize, and exports like any other addition.

One caveat belongs here: this is a visual signature, without a cryptographic certificate. It is an image of a signature placed on a page, not a certificate-based digital signature, and the editor makes no claim about the legal enforceability of electronic signatures.

Organize PDF Pages While Editing

Each thumbnail carries its own controls, so you can fix a document’s structure without leaving the editor: move a page up or down, rotate it 90° clockwise when it is sideways, duplicate it to keep a blank for notes, or delete it. All are undoable, the last remaining page cannot be deleted, and duplication stops at 500 pages.

These act on the one document you have open. To combine several PDFs, split one into individual files, or extract a range such as 1, 3-5, use Split & Merge PDF instead.

Undo, Redo, Zoom and Shortcuts

PDF editing involves many small decisions, so the editor keeps up to 50 history steps. Rapid changes to one object, such as dragging a slider, are grouped into a single step rather than flooding the history. Zoom runs from 20% to 300% with Fit width and Fit page, and the view re-fits when the window changes — which matters, because accurate placement of a small annotation depends on magnifying the exact region you are working on.

Does Editing a PDF Reduce Its Quality?

Not here, because pages are never rasterized. Some tools flatten every page into an image to make editing convenient, and that degrades the document: text stops being selectable and searchable, edges soften, and file size grows because a picture of text compresses far worse than text.

RMBG.PRO keeps your original page objects and draws new content on top as native PDF operations, so existing text, embedded fonts, vector graphics and images pass through unchanged. Latin text and shapes become real PDF objects, which is why you can select and search what you added. One honest exception: text in scripts outside the standard Latin encoding, such as Arabic, Chinese or Japanese, is drawn as a local image overlay so it appears as typed. It looks right but is not selectable text.

Browser-Based PDF Editing and Privacy

The whole pipeline runs on your device: the editor loads its own PDF engine and library in the browser, reads your file locally, renders it locally and writes the export locally. Your PDF, inserted images and drawn signature are not uploaded to RMBG.PRO infrastructure or stored remotely.

That differs from the common alternative, where uploading a contract or an identity document means someone else’s computer handles it and the file may outlive the session. Here edits live in memory for the current tab only, and because the export is a new -edited file, nothing you already had is at risk. Analytics events are sent only if you accepted analytics cookies, and never carry file contents.

Can You Edit a Scanned PDF?

Partly. A scanned PDF is a picture of a page, so everything that adds or marks content works normally on it: text, images, highlights, drawings, shapes and signatures. What does not work is correcting the scanned words, because Cover and replace needs a text layer to detect and this editor does not run OCR. If you need a scan searchable and correctable, run OCR first to create a real text layer, then edit that version.

Limits and What This Editor Cannot Do

  • No true reflow editing of existing text. Cover and replace approximates the font and leaves the original extractable.
  • No secure redaction. Whiteout and cover both cover visually only.
  • No OCR. Scans can be annotated but their text cannot be corrected.
  • No encrypted documents. Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first.
  • No form filling, no editing of embedded images. You can insert new images but not manipulate existing ones.
  • No cryptographic signatures, no merging or splitting.

Interactive features, existing digital signatures and elaborate forms are not guaranteed to survive page duplication or deletion, so keep a backup of complex files.

Common PDF Editing Mistakes

  • Expecting a PDF to behave like a Word document. There are no flowing paragraphs, so a sentence cannot grow in the middle of a block. Place new text in free space or over a covered region instead.
  • Treating whiteout as redaction. Painting over an identifier, account number or address does not remove it. It only hides it visually, and the data stays recoverable.
  • Rasterizing unnecessarily. Exporting through a tool that flattens pages makes text unselectable and inflates the file, for no benefit when the original structure can be preserved.
  • Converting back and forth. Repeated PDF to Word to PDF trips reduce quality and shift layouts, because each pass re-interprets the page. Make the change once, in the PDF.
  • Forgetting to check the export. Reopen the downloaded file and page through it to confirm annotations landed where you intended. It takes a minute and is the only real check that a document is ready to send.

What Can You Use an Online PDF Editor For?

  • Business documents. Explain a correction in the margin, add your logo to a report, sign an internal approval before circulating it.
  • Contracts and agreements. Highlight clauses you want to query, annotate where you disagree, add your signature. The tool makes no legal claims about enforceability, so check your own requirements.
  • Study materials. Highlight key passages in lecture notes and research papers, underline definitions, write margin notes.
  • Reports and review. Circle a figure that needs work, arrow an inconsistency, write feedback directly on the page.
  • Forms and proposals. Add text where a field was left blank, insert a product image or chart, sign the finished document.
  • Freelance work. Comment on a draft, mark up a specification, add a logo to an invoice, sign a delivered contract.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a PDF editor?↓

A tool that modifies a PDF which already exists. RMBG.PRO adds text, images, highlights, drawings, shapes and signatures, and reorders, rotates, duplicates or deletes pages, all by clicking and dragging on the page itself.

How can I edit a PDF online?↓

Drop your PDF onto the upload area, pick a page in the thumbnail sidebar, choose a tool such as Add text or Draw, click or drag on the page, then adjust the object in the Properties panel. Choose Export PDF when you are done. Nothing is uploaded.

Can I add text to a PDF?↓

Yes. Choose Add text and click where it should start. You get three font families, sizes from 6 to 144, bold, italic and underline, a colour, and left, centre or right alignment. Text you add stays editable while the document is open.

Can I edit existing text in a PDF?↓

Not with true reflowing text editing. The Cover and replace tool detects horizontal text regions, and clicking one places replacement text over it on a cover matched to the detected font. It approximates the styling, but the original text stays in the file and remains extractable.

Can I add an image to a PDF?↓

Yes. The Image tool takes PNG, JPEG and WebP files up to 20 MB, or you can drag an image onto the page. Move and resize it with the corner handle; images keep their aspect ratio. Oversized images are reduced to 2,400 pixels per side.

Can I highlight a PDF?↓

Yes. Highlight area paints a translucent rectangle over anything you drag across, on text, images or scanned pages. The default is soft yellow at partial opacity, and both colour and opacity are adjustable so the text underneath stays readable.

Can I draw on a PDF?↓

Yes. Draw records freehand strokes as vector paths, so they stay sharp when zoomed. Colour, stroke width from 0.5 to 20 and opacity are adjustable, and each stroke becomes an object you can move, restyle or delete.

Can I add a signature to a PDF?↓

Yes, three ways: draw it on the pad, type your name, or upload a signature image. The result is placed as an object you can move and resize. It is a visual signature without a cryptographic certificate.

Can I rotate, delete or reorder PDF pages?↓

Yes. Each thumbnail has controls to move a page up or down, rotate it 90 degrees clockwise, duplicate it or delete it. The last page cannot be deleted, and duplication stops at 500 pages. These act on the one document you have open.

What is the difference between the PDF Editor and Split & Merge PDF?↓

The PDF Editor changes content inside one document: text, images, annotations, signatures, page order. Split & Merge PDF changes document structure: it combines up to 30 files, splits a PDF into single pages, or extracts a range such as 1, 3-5.

Can I merge or split a PDF in the editor?↓

No. The editor works on one document and cannot combine files or emit separate pages. Use Split & Merge PDF for merging, splitting into single pages, or extracting a page range.

Does editing a PDF reduce its quality?↓

No. Pages are never rasterized. Original page objects are kept and new content is drawn on top as native PDF operations, so existing text, fonts and graphics pass through unchanged. Latin text stays selectable and searchable.

Are my PDF files uploaded to a server?↓

No. A self-hosted PDF engine and library read, render and write your file in the browser. Your PDF, inserted images and signature are not uploaded or stored remotely, and edits exist only in memory until you download them.

Can I edit a scanned PDF?↓

Partly. You can add text, images, highlights, drawings, shapes and signatures on a scanned page. You cannot correct the scanned text itself, because Cover and replace needs a text layer and this editor does not run OCR.

Can I edit password-protected PDFs?↓

No. Encrypted PDFs are rejected and must be unlocked first. Form fields are not editable in this workspace, and existing embedded images cannot be manipulated, though you can insert new ones.

Does the PDF Editor work on mobile?↓

Yes. Below 800 pixels wide, the Pages and Properties panels become slide-over drawers and touch targets grow. Drawing uses pointer events, so finger or stylus works. The practical limit is memory on very large documents.

What are the size limits?↓

A PDF can be up to 100 MB and 500 pages. Images are limited to 20 MB and reduced to 2,400 pixels per side for export. Large documents need more memory, particularly on phones and tablets.

Is whiteout the same as redacting a PDF?↓

No. Whiteout draws an opaque rectangle over content, and the original is still present and extractable by other tools. Use it to tidy a draft, never to hide sensitive information such as an identifier or home address.

A PDF Is Not Quite Static

Most PDF tools treat a document as finished the moment it is exported. A visual editor treats it as a page you can still work on: add text, insert an image, highlight a passage, draw on it, drop in a signature, put the pages in order, and export without rebuilding anything.

Combining or dividing whole documents? Use Split & Merge PDF instead, or browse all tools.
